Newsletter Jinwar
May 2023

Dear friends,
dear supporters of Jinwar,

It has been three months since our last newsletter and we are happy to keep you updated with this one.

During the last three months we had many reasons to celebrate in Jinwar. On the 8th of march was the international women’s day. Due to the situation in the earthquake areas, there were no big celebrations on that day as in the past years. However, we participated in the demonstration and raised our voice for the freedom of women all over the world.

On the 20th and 21th of march, we celebrated Newroz, the beginning of spring. The story around Newroz is a story of resistance in which a tyrant is defeated by the blacksmith Kawa, with the support of the rescued children from the mountains. Fires are lit everywhere as a sign of victory. This tradition of fire has been preserved throughout time and we in Jinwar also lit a fire and welcomed spring with songs and a jump over the embers.

On April 4th, we celebrated the birthday of Abdullah Öcalan. Abdullah Öcalan has been held in isolation for 24 years. The little contact with his lawyers and family has now completely broken off. The Turkish state prevents any contact. Abdullah Öcalan’s ideas on women’s liberation are also relevant for Jinwar. For many years it has been a tradition to plant trees on his birthday and we did the same in the village.

After Newroz, spring arrived in Jinwar and all the rose bushes are in full bloom. The whole village shines in white, red, pink and green.

The animals have also shed their winter clothes. We have sheared the sheep and we are now cleaning the wool and making pillows from it.

Spring, like every year, brings a lot of energy and life to the village, which is now mostly outside again. We started using the water reservoir which was also built as a swimming pool and the children are learning how to swim. We are having a lot of fun refreshing ourselves on the hot days.

The sewing is in full swing and has become more professional. After the sewing course last year, the women continue to teach each other how to sew. We sell the clothes we make, which contributes to the economic independence of the village and the women.

We also had a lot of visits from journalists and researchers from all over the world. A nice visit was from two women from our sistergarden “Hevrîn Khalef” in Berlin. The students from the university in Qamisho also came by, which gave us a lot of energy.

The work in Shifa Jin is also going on: we have planted a garden for natural medicinal herbs. In addition, we have been travelling in the surrounding villages and the area to collect plants that we have dried here in Jinwar. We have already processed some of them into oil. We also plan to produce cremes and thus take further steps towards independent health care.

There is always something to do in Jinwar and we also have more upcoming projects. We will soon also launch a campaign to raise money for this.

We continue to strive for self-sustained energy and want to further expand our solar system so that it can supply the whole village. We want to create a place for the children to learn more specific crafts and how to play musical instruments. And we are constantly expanding the infrastructure of Shifajin.
