New attacks on North-East Syria

A new series of large-scale military attacks by Turkey began last night across the entire swathe of North and East Syria from Shehba in the west to Derik at the northeastern point, and continued until midday local time today, 24 October, 2024.

The Water for Rojava Committee fully condemns these unwarranted attacks on the civilian population of a region already struggling to rebuild vital infrastructure from Turkey’s previous attacks, which have continued unabated at a lower level since the last of these intensified attacks in January.

Airstrikes have again targeted the means of life and livelihood across the region, especially oil refineries, gas production sites, electrical grids, grain silos and at least one bakery. Medical and healthcare facilities were again repeatedly targeted during this attack, as they have been throughout the year. The Sweidiya gas plant has been destroyed yet again. Workers at many of these facilities were killed or badly injured in the attacks.

These airstrikes in cities, towns and villages across the entire region of North and East Syria, including Shehba, Manbij, Kobane, Til Tamer, Amude, Qamishlo, Rmelan and Derik have significantly increased the danger of moving around both within and between cities. The road to the only open border crossing at Semalka was targeted extensively and remains extremely dangerous.

The Water for Rojava Committee have confirmed the safety of our local committee members and extend our heartfelt solidarity to all people of the region.
