The Kurdish Red Crescent is working on a project to build housing units for those affected by the earthquake in al-Shahba district, with donations made by the people of Sulaymaniyah as part of the “We Keep You Comfortable” campaign.
The homes of al-Shahba district were severely damaged as a result of the earthquakes that struck areas in Bakur Kurdistan and areas of northern Syria during February of this year.
To remedy the matter, the local administration authority in Afrin and al-Shahba canton formed a committee to uncover the extent of the damage, and provided tents to families whose homes had become uninhabitable, in addition to demolishing homes that pose a threat to the lives of the people.
The Autonomous Administration of Afrin and al-Shahba canton then submitted the file for a project to build housing units for the Kurdish Red Crescent, to approve the construction of 130 housing units from donations from the people of Sulaymaniyah Governorate in Southern Kurdistan, as part of the “We Keep You Comfortable” campaign.
Work on preparing 50 units began since the beginning of last August, in the town of Babnis. Each unit is equipped with two rooms and utilities (kitchen and bathroom), and according to the civil engineer supervising the project, Shorshavan Ali, 50 units will also be built in the village of Tel-Qurah and 30 in the village of Tal Susin.
Shorshavan pointed out the difficulties they face, “When the budget for building this project was set, the prices were completely different from the current situation, due to the high exchange rate of the dollar against the Syrian pound.”
It was expected that the 5 units would be completed within 6 months from the start of work, but the continuing attacks of the Turkish occupation army and its mercenaries, as well as the siege imposed on the district by the Damascus government, prevented this, according to Shorshavan Ali.
In conjunction with the construction of housing units in the town of Babnis, work is currently underway to prepare the ground for building the units in the village of Tal Qarah.
The “We Keep You” campaign was launched in February of this year in the city of Sulaymaniyah, as a community initiative by the people of the city and its countryside, to support the people of NE Syria, against the backdrop of the earthquakes that affected several regions in NE Syria.
