Women in the Girê Spî Camp [a camp for internally displaced people who have fled the Turkish invasion and occupation of Girê Spî, close to Raqqa] support the camp residents by developing communal projects.
Women started farming on 60 decares of land, not only to meet their needs but also to help refugees in the camp with a Kongra Star-led project.
As part of the project women grow different vegetables and sell the tomato paste and pickles they prepare. Putting their vegetables on the market at affordable prices, women are also able to invest some of their income in future projects.
Speaking about the project, Kongra Star member Rama Baac said: “Thanks to this communal project, the first step of which was taken by the camp management, the agricultural lands in the camp are now being used. Thanks to the project, many women were offered job opportunities. Many women earn a living for themselves and their families thanks to this project.”
Pointing out that the Turkish state is trying to break the will of the people, Baac added: “For this reason, women are targeted in every way. This project was implemented thanks to the will of the women.”
