Economic projects for women in Deir ez-Zor continue to flourish

Womens Bakery Co-operative in Deir ez Zor

The Al-Jazarat Women’s Assembly established this bakery co-operative in Deir ez Zor in 2018. The bakery has five women working in it and produces three tonnes of bread every day. The bread the women produce can be sold at a lower price, and the women share the profits equally among themselves.

The Women’s Economy Committee affiliated to the Women’s Administration opened a bakery on 1 November 2018 in the region of al-Kasrat in Deir ez-Zor.

Four women and two men work in the bakery, which makes bread from 4am to 10pm. The bakery produces four tons of bread daily and tries to meet the needs of the people with overtime in case of higher demand.

Nur El Huda Muhammed, one of the bakery staff, told ANHA: “As women in Deir ez-Zor, we needed such a project to help the development of women’s economy. Here, we both provide our livelihood and support other projects aimed at increasing women’s economy.”

Another bakery worker named Assad Muhammed said that the perspective of the society changed with the role of women in production. “There are two men and four women working in this oven. Now our perception towards women has changed.”

A citizen named Mahmud al-Ubeyd comes to buy bread from the bakery every day. He expressed his satisfaction by stating that the bread produced by women is of good quality and affordable.
